Workshop

The Werner Herzog Experience in the Azores has wrapped up with great success.

Between January 14th and 24th of 2026, 50 filmmakers from across the globe converged on the Portuguese archipelago for an intensive 11-day cinematic journey.

Following the legacy of our previous workshops in Cuba, Peru and La Palma, this year’s program emphasized the art of writing and the search for "ecstatic truth." Under Herzog’s direct mentorship, participants utilized the islands' dramatic volcanic terrain to craft original short films that push the boundaries of visual storytelling. Herzog’s longtime cinematographer Peter Zeitlinger accompanied the workshop for a few days.

The unique atmosphere of this workshop and Herzog's teaching philosophy were recently captured in a New York Times feature, which you can read here: New York Times - Werner Herzog’s School of the Impossible
